However, while this is great news as PS4 and PC users can download the free game mode, there’s some slightly disappointing news for Xbox users.
Confirmed in a tweet sent by the games official Twitter account in the last 10 minutes, it appears as though it could still be a few more hours before Battle Royale is available for Xbox One gamers.
The developers Tweeted:
“The servers are back up! Squad up now for free in Battle Royale on PC/PS4. The free version will be available on Xbox One in a few hours.”
Players might not be waiting for all that much longer for the new Fortnite Battle Royale update.
A new tweet from the Fortnite team reads:
“We’re updating Fortnite and servers are currently down. We’ll update here as soon as we’re live again!”
Fortnite’s Battle Royale update is released today on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Mac and best of all, Epic Games have announced it will be part of a free-to-play update – even if you don’t already have Fortnite!
Fortnight is traditionally known as a tower defence-style game, but today will launch a new Battle Royale mode to compliment the PvE side of the game.
It’s not been without controversy, attracting a lot of negative comments and comparisons to Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG).
Like PUBG, Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode pits 100 players against one another on a massive open map.
There’s no respawn’s, it’s kill or be killed and the last player standing, wins.
As mentioned, the Fortnite Battle Royale free update will arrive today, Tuesday September 26, but not before the games servers go down for an “extended” period.
Epic Games have revealed that Battle Royale is part of the v1.6.3 patch which is coming soon to PS4, Xbox One, PC and Mac.
Fortnite’s free-to-play Battle Royale mode will be available once servers come back online after going down at 1am PT, 4am ET and 9am BST.
However, there is no time revealed for when these servers could come back online with the new mode ready to play.
In a new blog post, the Fortnite team said: “It’s time for everyone to drop out of the Battle Bus and into Fortnite Battle Royale as the mode goes free on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Mac with the release of the 1.6.3 patch tomorrow (Sept. 26).
“Gather your squad – four-player and two-player groups are here.”
Stay tuned for more updates as they’re revealed.
